What's the story on Throwback Games?

Throwback Games is an independent, one-man-operation dedicated to game creation. 'Jam It' is the debut release, with more game ideas in the pipeline.

Future releases may branch beyond the C64, however the games that are produced will be strongly influenced by those in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras.

I don't have a Commodore 64, can I play this on my PC, Mac, game console or handheld?

Yes you can!

This is achieved by using an 'emulator'. Jam It is being released as a digital download so you can play it on a modern system with an installed emulator.

An emulator is software that you can download and run on your PC, Mac, game console or handheld. It duplicates the functions of the Commodore 64, so that it resembles the behavior of the real system.

Find an emulator to download and run on your system, by searching Google for '{your system} c64 emulator'

Some popular emulators are:

  • WinVice/Vice - Windows/Mac (provides 4 player joystick emulation)
  • CCS64 - Windows
  • FrodoDS - NintendoDS
  • VicePSP - PSP
  • Frodo - Android Mobile
  • FrodoWii - Nintendo Wii

How does it work with 4 players when the Commodore 64 only supports 2 joysticks?

If you have a Commodore 64 computer, you can buy a Protovision 4 player adapter.

If using the Emulator 'VICE 64', select "Settings" -> "Userport joystick settings" -> "CGA userport joy adapter". "CGA" stands for "Classic Games Adapter".

Jam It is probably the best basketball game on the C64. Fun and challenging arcade style gameplay makes the single player mode worthwhile, while in multiplayer the game is an absolute hoot! Highly Recommended.

The attention to detail is great and includes replays, commentary and highlight shots which can be activated before shooting to slow down time. This game is best experienced with several people but Jam It caters for the solo player as well with the option of controlling one or two players against AI opponents ...

Jam It! by Throwback Games is a brave attempt at trying to bring the fun back into sports games for the 8-bits, and all I can say is, it's an utter success.

Commodore Plus (Spain)

The game is worthy in all aspects. Instructions and menu are very understandable and tutorials, despite being in English, is no loss. Jam-It has become undoubtedly a classic released in the commercial era of our C64 and is an occasion for lovers of basketball to have fun and compete against the CPU or up to 3 other friends.

Ahoy magazine

Jam-It makes good use of the Commodore 64’s capabilities. The graphics are easy on the eyes and lag-free. The sounds are what you would expect from a basketball game – dribbling ball and the “hiss” of the crowd when you make a shot. Jam-It is a great basketball game and I hope Throwback Games releases many more titles.
